Welcome! My name is Emily Clark (she/her), and I'm a Visual Artist and Educator who fell in love with books and became an accredited Librarian who specializes in information architecture and information interaction design. Information systems are inherently complex and my work aims to simplify that complexity through applying information science to create functional and visually intuitive information systems.
I have spent over a decade working in a busy academic library setting, helping users navigate complex information systems and analyzing user research to improve library services. During this time, I also started a studio practice creating art for exhibitions, teaching visual arts, and doing freelance web and graphic design work for local small businesses.
I developed a passion for information design while completing a Master's in Library and Information Science through the University of Alberta. During my studies, I realized I have a unique talent for translating complex information into simple and intuitive visual designs. This inspired me to specialize in classification, metadata, information architecture, database design, and user experience within digital libraries, archives, and records management systems.
After graduating, I realized I wanted to pursue a career in User Experience and User Interface Design, specializing in Information Architecture and Information Interaction Design. I further honed my skills by earning a certification in UX/UI Design through the University of Alberta’s Continuing Education Program.
My professional and academic background in information science provides me with a unique lens through which I approach UX/UI challenges. Issues with the architecture and arrangement of the information system can present as visual design problems. It is unlikely, however, that a visual design approach will adequately resolve issues of this nature. One of the biggest challenges when working with information is the complexity of it and is an area I have a lot of expertise.
I am excited to utilize my expertise to help cultivate information systems and applications that are as functional and simple as they are beautiful.
